Vanilla or Lemon or Nutmeg Sauce

2 C water

1 C sugar

1T cornstarch

½ C butter

2 tsp. Vanilla or nutmeg or 2 T lemon juice

with 2 T lemon zest or grated rind.

Mix sugar and cornstarch. Slowly add water, stirring to mix and incorporate. Boil, still stirring, one minute. Slowly stir in flavoring and butter.  Mix well.
